Paul's Pantry Donation - The BCHBA gave back to
the community at the 2016 Home Expo by offering free admission to
the event with a donation to Paul's Pantry.
Over 9 barrels of food were collected for Paul's Pantry at the
2016 Home Expo. Paul's Pantry has distributed over 76.4 million
pounds of food to the needy of Brown County since 1984. Paul's
Pantry was one of the first food pantries to seek available surplus
food from the marketplace each year.

Association Awards Winning Entries
in its "Build A Dog A Dream House" Contest
The Brown County Home Builders Association (BCHBA), representing
more than 650 members of the homebuilding industry in our area, has
presented four cash awards to the winning entries in its 2016
"Build a Dog a Dream House" contest:
Builder's Choice Awards - given in recognition
of the overall creativity, design and quality of construction in
its student entry.
1st Place Award $250 - Pulaski Community Middle School
2nd Place Award $100 - Aldo Community Middle School
People's Choice Awards - presented for most
popular student entry by consumer vote.

In January, the BCHBA held a 'Build a Dog a Dream House' contest
to challenge local middle school students and spark their interest
in the construction industry. Five schools competed including
Aldo Leopold Community School, Crivitz Middle School, Denmark
Middle School, De Pere Middle School and Pulaski Community Middle
School. The doghouses were displayed at The Home Expo at the
KI Center Jan. 28-31. Consumers were able to vote and/or bid
on the doghouses either in person or online. All doghouses
received bids and have been sold; one was sold and donated to the
Bay Area Humane Society. This was the second year the BCHBA
hosted this student build project.
October Madness: The BCHBA supports area
STINGCANCER programs (find out more at www.stingcancer.com) by
providing grants to schools looking to start a new STINGCANCER
chapter or further an existing chapter. This past fall, theBCHBA
hosted the Women in Building October Madness Auction which raised
$9,000 to support this local charity.
Porch Build: In May of 2015, the BCHBA
coordinated an effort to build a new porch for a family in need.
Association members donated time and materials to the project.
J&J Builders of Northeast Wisconsin donated the time and crew
to build the porch, Drexel Building Supply donated the materials,
and AdvancedDisposal provided the dumpster. The end result was a
beautiful addition to their home and a happy little boy who now has
a safe porch to play on.
Career Day - BCHBA Staff were on site at Howe
Elementary School for their Career Day on Friday, February 27,
Executive Officer, Mari McAllister-Charles and
Membership/Showcase Coordinator Melissa Steffen talked to the fifth
grade classes about careers in the building industry.
Six mini-sessions were held and students learned about different
career paths as well as participating in a hands-on building
project courtesy of Home Depot.
The BCHBA has made it an initiative to ensure that students of
all ages are aware of the different opportunities for skilled
laborers in the industry.
The Brown County Home Builders Association, along with other
community supporters, has partnered with neighborWorks® Green
Bay on their latest renovation project. The premise of the
partnership is to use high school students to complete the
The latest project was a two-flat home that will provide safe,
affordable housing for two families of modest means. An open house
was held to tour the homes located at 301 and 303 S. Oakland

The 20 Women to Know issue is an annual publication of You
Magazine. It honors influential women who are inspiring
conversations, shaping their organizations and changing the way we
do business in the community.
The Brown County Home Builders Association recently donated
funds to allow the UW Green Bay Collegiate Chapter of Habitat for
Humanity to take a mission trip to the Philippines. Here is a note
of thanks from their team for helping to make the amazing
experience a possibility:
We are back from our Habitat for Humanity Global Village
trip to the Philippines. It was absolutely the experience of a
lifetime. Words fail us. Suffice it to say that, for us, the
housing communities where we worked showed us poverty on a scope
and scale unimaginable here. The need for safe, durable, affordable
housing in this country is profound, with a backlog of nearly four
million people living in urban slums. But, unexpectedly, the
communities we served were unusually vibrant - there were small
micro-economies within the slums with businesses and services - and
the people were kind, grateful and generous. I have traveled some
myself, and I believe that the Filipino people are among the
nicest, most polite, happiest people I have ever met.
The work we did was hard and manual. The tools on hand were
buckets, shovels, pick axes to break rock, hacksaws to cut re-bar,
etc. Everything we did in a week (mostly digging holes in soil and
rock, mixing concrete, and setting foundation footings and building
support columns) would have been done in a half day here with a
back hoe and a jackhammer. It took 26 of us a full week to do it by
hand (11 of us from the US, joined by 15 college students from
Japan). But we did not go there to judge, just to contribute our
labor and immerse ourselves in this culture and community, and that
There is no way that ten college kids from Wisconsin can
have an experience like this and not have their world view
permanently altered. The same is true for me. We return home
humbled, and deeply moved by our experience.

American Red Cross - The BCHBA coordinated a
blood drive with the American Red Cross on Saturday, January 18,
2014. This was our fourth year that we teamed up with the American
Red Cross. A total of 17 pints were collected from helping save 51
